The Skin's pH Value: What it is, why it matters – and how to protect it

There's a single value that can determine clarity or impurities, moisture or tightness – and it's often underestimated in the skincare world: the skin's pH value.

Your Skin's Invisible Protective Barrier

Healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic – its optimal pH value lies between 4.5 and 5.5. This acidity is the result of a sophisticated biological system: the so-called acid mantle. It consists of skin oils, sweat, amino acids, and lactic acid bacteria – and forms the first line of defense against bacteria, moisture loss, and premature skin aging.
If this value gets out of balance, a silent chain reaction begins – at a cellular level and, as we know from epigenetic research, even at a genetic level.

How to notice something is wrong

The body sends clear signals. Typical signs of a disturbed pH value:

  • Tightness, dryness, or flakiness after cleansing → pH too high (too alkaline)
  • Redness, burning, or hypersensitivity to new products → compromised barrier
  • Impurities, acne proneness, or excessive sebum → pH too low (too acidic)

If your skin constantly reacts to products instead of benefiting from them, it's often an indication of a pH value outside the optimal range.

What throws the pH value out of balance – and what helps?

Aggressive soaps (pH 9–11), overly frequent cleansing, hard tap water, and stress are the most common disruptive factors. While the skin can regulate itself, it needs support:

  • Choose mild, soap-free cleansers with a pH of 4.5–6
  • Don't over-layer active ingredients – less, but targeted
  • Don't skip a barrier-strengthening moisturizer after cleansing

"pH-neutral" – sounds good, but isn't always

Many products advertise "pH-neutral" – from a dermatological perspective, however, this is misleading. pH-neutral means pH 7, the value of water. For the skin, which requires a slightly acidic environment, this is too high – and can even disrupt the acid mantle.

What truly matters: products that are skin-physiologically formulated and have a pH value in the range of 4.5–6. At Dr. Tonar Cosmetics, this is not a promise – it's a scientific standard.

A small value with a big impact

The pH value is the silent foundation of healthy skin – from the effectiveness of your active ingredients to long-term skin aging. Understanding it leads to smarter skincare.
